Target: Mayor Vince Gray, Washington D.C.
Goal: Commend mayor for the important step Washington D.C. has taken to expand health insurance protection for transgender residents
In a very important move for transgender rights, Mayor Vince Gray of Washington D.C. recently announced the end of exclusions in health insurance on the basis of gender identity and expression. Under the new changes, insurance companies regulated by the D.C. government must now recognize gender dysphoria as a medical condition and cover gender-reassignment surgery under their plans. Mayor Gray’s announcement is a welcome change for the transgender community as it fights to attain the rights everyone should be afforded.
Gender dysphoria, otherwise known as gender identity disorder, is a diagnosis for individuals who experience discontent with the sex they are assigned at birth and/or the gender roles associated with that sex. Also referred to as transgender, these individuals face discrimination in many aspects of their lives, often due to misunderstanding and ignorance. Having gender-reassignment surgery covered under D.C.’s new protections ensures that many more transgender individuals will have access to a medically necessary procedure that is normally prohibitively expensive.
Thank Mayor Vince Gray for his role in ensuring the end to discrimination toward transgender individuals in insurance plans, and for standing up for transgender rights. Not only does D.C. now provide some of the most comprehensive healthcare programs for transgender individuals, it will serve as a precedent and model for the rest of the U.S. to follow suit.
Dear Mayor Vince Gray,
Your recent announcement about the steps Washington D.C. has taken to protect against discrimination of transgender individuals is a welcome change to the treatment they usually face. Requiring that insurance companies cover medically necessary treatments like gender-reassignment surgery is a huge step in ensuring transgender individuals are afforded the rights they deserve.
I am writing to thank you for pursuing and seeing this decision through. Your initiative will make D.C. an excellent model for the rest of the country, and it is a very important achievement for the transgender community. Your announcement further cements the idea that all members of society should be treated equally, regardless of how they identify and express themselves. This country needs more leaders like you who are courageous enough to stand up to the ignorance that perpetuates stereotypes and misunderstanding concerning transgender individuals.
