Ban Sale of Commercially Bred Dogs In Pet Stores

Target: Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy

Goal: Ban the sale of commercially bred dogs in pet stores and help put an end to cruel puppy mills

Dogs in commercial breeding facilities are often forced to endure deplorable living conditions and suffer from life-threatening illnesses that their breeders regularly allow to go untreated. Locked in cramped wire cages that are only slightly larger than their own bodies, puppy mill dogs are deprived of even the most basic comforts including bedding, exercise, socialization, sunlight and in extreme cases, drinking water. Banning the commercial sale of puppy mill dogs in new and existing pet stores would help put an end to this vile industry and save thousands of innocent animals from abuse and neglect.

The adult female dogs in puppy mills are bred as regularly as possible with little to no recovery time between their litters, as the breeders attempt to maximize their profit margin with no regard for the lives of the animals in their care. Poorly ventilated kennels have been known to disperse ammonia-saturated air, which can be incredibly damaging to the dogs’ health. The animals’ prison-like quarters cause severe emotional and psychological distress in addition to the development and spread of diseases such as diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease, kidney disease and respiratory disorders.

By signing this petition, you will be urging Connecticut government officials to ban the sale of commercially bred dogs in new pet stores and help to phase out the sale of puppy mill dogs in currently licensed pet stores.

Dear Governor Malloy,

I am writing to urge you to support an immediate ban on the sale of commercially bred dogs in new pet stores and to phase out their sale in currently licensed pet stores throughout Connecticut. The animals raised in commercially bred facilities, commonly known as “puppy mills,” are often subjected to life-threatening abuse and neglect, living in poorly ventilated areas and locked in cramped wire cages that are barely larger than their bodies.

Weak federal commercial breeding legislation has allowed this mistreatment to continue virtually without penalty, but with your help Connecticut could have the honor of being the first state in the nation to pass a law banning the commercial sale of puppy mill dogs. We simply cannot allow this cruel industry to continue to profit off the abuse and such compassionate, intelligent, and loving creatures.

Please do everything in your power to enforce an immediate ban of the sale of puppy mill dogs in new pet stores and work to end the sale of commercially bred dogs altogether. Your efforts will hopefully inspire the remaining 49 states to take stronger actions against this cruel and inhumane industry and help improve the lives of thousands of commercially bred dogs.
