Target: Arizona Governor Jan Brewer
Goal: Thank Governor Jan Brewer for ending a destructive and homophobic bill
Senate Bill 1062 was a controversial proposal that outraged many before it was recently vetoed by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer. The bill would have allowed individuals and businesses to discriminate against homosexual customers, and even deny them service altogether. Thank Governor Brewer for standing up against discriminatory policies.
Governor Jan Brewer considered every angle of the legislation before making her decision to veto it and keep Arizona businesses open to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation. The governor claimed the bill could have “the potential to create more problems than it purports to solve.” She received more than 40,000 calls and emails voicing opinions and, after weighing the arguments from both sides, made her decision: “Religious liberty is a core American and Arizona value. So is non-discrimination.”
Though the bill was disguised and promoted as a religious protection for business owners, there is nothing Christian about shamelessly ostracizing others because of their sexual orientation. Still, many proponents of the bill claimed it was a necessary law that would protect them from being forced to act contrary to their beliefs. Some believe that they can promote their services to others but conveniently rescind the offer to homosexual individuals or couples. They believe that they can manipulate and decontextualize a few Bible passages in order to convince the government that their beliefs and opinions are solid grounds for blatant discrimination.
Some religious business owners sadly still do not understand that their businesses must adhere to state policy that dictates no one can be discriminated against due to race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation.
While this bill has been vetoed, more biased legislation will undoubtedly follow it. Thank Governor Jan Brewer for her efforts to stop division among American citizens, and for recognizing the harm of laws that permit open discrimination of a minority group.
Dear Arizona Governor Jan Brewer,
I would like to express my gratitude for your decision to veto Senate Bill 1062, a measure that would have allowed businesses to openly discriminate against gay individuals. This bill would have caused dissension among residents of Arizona and resulted in more harm than good. While religious liberty is important in our nation, it cannot infringe on the rights of others. Openly discriminating against people due to their sexual orientation is unlawful.
While there will certainly be more bills of this sort proposed in the future, it is encouraging that you have chosen to speak out against such divisive and discriminatory policies. Thank you for your decision to maintain equality in the state of Arizona.
