Ban Cancer Causing Food Dyes

Is it worth the risk of cancer just to liven up the color of our food? According to the FDA, it is. The food dyes “Red 40,” “Yellow 5,” and “Yellow 6” have been linked to such issues as hyperactivity, migraines, and cancer. Europe has already banned some of these additives, however the US still turns a blind eye. These chemicals must be banned if America hopes to quell the cancer epidemic.

Perhaps the worst thing about food coloring additives is that children are the most likely consumers of the products that contain them. An overwhelming amount of products contain Red 40, like candy, ice cream, soda and cereal. Some of the most renowned and frequently purchased brands contain Red 40 in their ingredient lists. Even products that seem healthy may be colored with these additives like salad dressings or fruit cups.

With the knowledge that these chemicals are linked to cancer and that an overwhelming majority of popular foods contain them, the FDA is not only allowing us to slowly poison ourselves, but they are making it difficult not to. In order to find versions of foods without these chemicals, many people shop at health food stores. However these stores are sparse compared to chain supermarkets and many communities do not have them. Some people cannot afford upscale health foods, and so they are practically forced to eat chemical-laden foods, often without realizing the danger. Sign this petition demanding that the FDA stop placing profit before safety.


Dear Michael Landa,

By turning a blind eye to the use of food coloring additives, you are potentially causing a plague of health problems in Americans that could easily be avoided. The three most prominent food dyes, “Red 40,” “Yellow 5,” and “Yellow 6,” have been linked to an array of horrible health problems like cancer. These additives must be banned for the safety of consumers.

Color enhancing food additives are completely unnecessary. They provide no nutritional value, no improved taste, and would be easy to remove from the production process. Children are often the primary consumers of some of the products containing the chemicals, thus by not banning these products the FDA is directly and knowingly promoting childhood cancer. These chemicals are in such a wide array of products that it is likely impossible to leave a supermarket without accidentally buying at least one.

Food coloring additives are nothing but a sales tactic and it is costing Americans their health. Ban these chemicals from use immediately.
