Demand That an Elderly Polar Bear Be Removed From Desert Zoo

Polar Bear

Target: Mendoza Governor Francisco Perez

Goal: Demand that an elderly polar bear be moved to a more suitable environment

Arturo the polar bear has long been imprisoned in a desert cage at the Mendoza Zoo in Argentina where temperatures can reach upwards of 100 degrees. The ideal climate for polar bears is much colder, as the animals have layers of fur which protects them from the sub-zero temperatures of their natural habitat in the Arctic. While a zoo in Canada has offered to take Arturo, the government of Mendoza has recently decided that the bear must stay in South America.

Animal activists have been fighting to have the 29-year-old animal moved to the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Canada, where the environment is much more conducive for Arturo to have a healthy, comfortable existence. Things came to a grinding halt earlier this month when the Mendoza Zoo could not provide the medical history necessary to allow the polar bear to be imported to Canada. This lack of paperwork, combined with a biased medical examination, seems to have sentenced Arturo to spend the rest of his life in a harsh desert environment.

Gabriel Flores, an activist with the Ecologists United organization, says that the medical examination, which claimed that Arturo was too weak to travel, was extremely minimal. “The evaluation they did was visual, without touching him, observing him from a distance. They only checked how he walks, how he eats, and how he swims. It was a halfway fake evaluation that doesn’t convince us at all,” he told Fox News.

We need to ask the Mendoza Government to re-examine Arturo and encourage the Mendoza Zoo to find the paperwork that would make his transfer to the preferable conditions of Canada possible. Sign the petition below to help secure Arturo a happy and healthy future.

Dear Governor Francisco Perez,

I was disappointed to learn that paperwork and an insufficient medical exam were condemning Arturo the polar bear to live out the rest of his days in the harsh desert climate of Mendoza. The ideal climate for polar bears is much colder than the temperatures in Argentina, as the animals have layers of fur which protect them from the sub-zero temperatures of the Arctic.

The Assiniboine Park Zoo in Canada is willing to take Arturo, but bureaucracy and red tape seem to be preventing the transfer. I am asking you to do everything in your power to move Arturo to a more suitable environment.

SEÑOR Gobernador Fransisco Perez queremos que el oso polar Arturo viva en Canada y no en Mendoza donde el hábitats es sumamente caluroso y daña al animal .

  2. This gives zoos a really bad name and has put Mendoza on the map as a place to avoid. Poor bear, it amounts to living hell.

  3. A better world through kindness to animals

  4. Petar Radmilovic says:

Sand this nice polar bear to Canada and save this creature to be tortured.
