Target: President Yoweri Museveni
Goal: Revoke extreme anti-gay law recently passed in Uganda
Ugandan president Museveni recently signed a bill creating harsher penalties against gays. While the country was already quite intolerant, it is now even more dangerous to be discovered as gay. This law must be repealed if Uganda truly wants to limit violence and encourage safety for its citizens.
After signing the anti-gay bill into law just days ago, Museveni stated that homosexuality is a “trend” that should be “discouraged.” If someone is found committing homosexual acts, punishments can be as severe as life in prison. While many world leaders discouraged the bill, including President Obama who called it a “step backwards,” Ugandan legislators ignored backlash and enacted it as a law.
Gay rights groups in Uganda like Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) are now at a heightened risk of persecution and ill treatment, while their organization could be considered criminal by legislators. This law has not only made homosexuality illegal, but makes gay rights activists fearful of retaliation.
This is a disturbing law that goes against what most of the world is working towards. In many countries, equal rights are taken for granted today. However in Uganda, legislators are refusing to cooperate and have instead implemented hateful laws that put a demographic of people in danger daily. Please sign this petition to spread awareness of this radical movement against basic human rights.
You recently enacted a law to further discourage and criminalize homosexuality in Uganda. As a president, this is irresponsible. This law creates nothing but an atmosphere of suspicion, confusion, and dishonesty amongst citizens. It should be repealed immediately as it creates the image that Uganda is an ignorant country that is lagging behind the rest of the world.
This law will not change gay individuals, as you seem to think. People are not light switches that can be flipped on or off at your convenience. This mindset displays a basic lack of understanding of how human beings operate. The personal preferences, opinions, and wants of an individual cannot be forced or directed by oppressive laws. This will instead create a rift between citizens and government. People will feel less trusting and accepting of the Ugandan government, while other nations will look down on Uganda as well.
Gays in Uganda will be in hiding, but they will not change. Thus this law serves no purpose and is a hindrance to otherwise successful gay individuals in your society. Repeal this law and start making genuine efforts towards a peaceful and educated community.
