Request Apology for Actor’s Comparison of Gay Marriage to Incest

Target: Famed Actor Adam Baldwin

Goal: Attain an apology for Adam Baldwin’s inaccurate and offensive remarks about homosexuality

Adam Baldwin, an actor known for his performances in The Patriot and Firefly, recently tweeted an outlandish remark comparing gay marriage to incest. He questioned the redefinition of marriage and suggested that change may result in the social acceptance of fathers marrying their sons to obtain tax benefits. His comments were openly criticized, but he responded to his critics with name-calling and further offensive remarks. Request Adam Baldwin apologize for his rude commentary and refrain from demonizing members of his audience in the future.

With the right to freedom of speech, Adam Baldwin is at liberty to say anything he likes. However, a well-known actor who offends an entire minority group of people by openly demonizing their lifestyle is making a poor decision and would do better to show respect and consideration to his fans. Baldwin was certainly not considering the repercussions of his actions when he tweeted the following in regards to the redefinition of marriage: “What’s wrong, now, with a father marrying his son for love & to avoid tax penalties?”

According to Baldwin, legalizing same-sex marriage would lead to incest as families attempt to get tax breaks. There are many problems with this statement.

Baldwin is contributing to the vilification of an entire group of human beings simply because of their sexual orientation. Such discrimination is not only blatantly offensive, but it promotes the unfair idea that gay individuals are somehow lesser or deviant. Comparisons of a gay lifestyle to bestiality have the same harmful effect.

In addition to being offensive and unfair, Baldwin’s evaluation of the changing scope of marriage makes no sense. If he had given any thought to his words, he would question why fathers do not marry daughters, or mothers marry sons, in order to obtain such tax benefits today. He may also have reconsidered his decision to add the hashtag “PolymorphousPerversity” to the end of his rant.

Baldwin’s fans deserve better than this.

While dissent is unavoidable in today’s political society, there is no reason for any public figure to vilify minority groups and promote dishonest representations of them. Gay marriage does not lead to incest. Such brazen comparisons are wrong and hurtful to many. Urge Adam Baldwin to apologize to his fans for his inappropriate remarks.

Dear Adam Baldwin,

Recently, you made a public remark about the redefinition of marriage and compared homosexuality to incest. I strongly disapprove of your behavior and encourage you to apologize for these comments. While it is permissible to disagree with policies and practices, it is wrong to vilify minority groups and promote false representations of their lifestyle to the public.

As you surely know, gay marriage does not lead to incest. Your comparison was outlandish and made no sense whatsoever. If your question had any validity, fathers would already be marrying their daughters and mothers marrying their sons. As it remains, your comments were made solely to denigrate gay individuals, and this has hurt your fans as well as your image. Please apologize for your offensive remarks.
