Target: Senator Steve Martin
Goal: Condemn lawmaker for referring to pregnant women as a “child’s host”
Anti-choice legislators are notorious for speaking out concerning their views on abortion in misogynistic, sexist, and misguided ways, and a recent rant from one senator is no exception. Virginia Senator Steve Martin recently published a post on his Facebook account where he referred to pregnant women solely as a “child’s host”, blatantly disregarding the autonomy of women in making their own reproductive choices. Martin’s comments came in response to a critical message he received from reproductive right’s advocates, and is a disturbing reminder of the ways anti-choice politicians think women don’t have a say in decisions about their own bodies.
Martin’s remarks reflect the anti-choice position that a fetus should also be considered a person, and should be afforded the same right. This is an extremely dangerous position to take when it regards the mother in question, as she is without a doubt a viable person with a right to life, and should be treated that way. When a woman becomes pregnant her considerations and decisions should be solely her own, and she deserves the dignity of being seen as a human being.
Politicians using language like Martin used to refer to women can no longer be accepted, as it promotes the idea that women have no autonomy over their own bodies. Tell Martin that his reference to women as simply a “child’s host” is demeaning and will not be accepted as a viable argument against abortion. Women deserve better, and politicians have no place making remarks about their personal decisions.
Dear Senator Steve Martin,
Recently you made an extremely offensive remark on your Facebook when you referred to pregnant women as a “child’s host.” This choice of language is not only demeaning towards women, it disregards their autonomy when it comes to making decisions about their own body.
I am writing to urge you to consider the ways you convey your opinions in the future. You are entitled to believe what you want, but you are not in any position to determine that an adult woman’s body is simply a vessel for carrying a fetus. I sincerely hope you will be more tactful in expressing yourself in the future, and leave demeaning language out of it. Women deserve more respect, and are entitled to their own decisions.
