Target: President Yoweri Museveni
Goal: Condemn Uganda’s president for signing anti-gay bill into law
Despite outcry from around the world and from within the nation, the Ugandan president recently signed an anti-gay bill and turned it into law. This discriminatory and damaging piece of legislation has severe consequences for those who are gay and lesbian in Uganda, and only adds to the homophobic atmosphere of the nation. President Yoweri Museveni should be immediately condemned for this damning piece of law.
The new law states that anyone caught having same-sex conduct receives life imprisonment. Those who “attempt to commit homosexuality” or “aiding and abetting homosexuality” will be sent to prison for seven years. Anyone who also “keeps a house, a room, set of rooms, or any kind of place for homosexuality” also faces seven years imprisonment. Since the law makes promotion of homosexuality illegal, anyone could be placed in jail for simply expressing their opinion.
This law violates a handful of human rights, including the right to privacy, freedom of speech and expression, and the internationally protected rights to freedom of association. This law invades family life and has dire implications for a family or person who wants to live with a gay or lesbian.
This law also has sweeping consequences towards the social atmosphere in the nation. Already, the atmosphere in the nation is extremely homophobic and this law only supports this mentality. The president who has been in office for almost three decades, has been known to suppress freedom of speech and expression; this law is just another example of his abuse of power. He should be immediately condemned for signing this bill into law.
Dear President Yoweri Museveni,
Recently you signed an anti-gay bill into law, sentencing those have same-sex into jail for life, and those associating with homosexuality into jail for seven years. There has been outcry against this legislation from around the world and even from within your nation, yet you signed it. I hope you realize that this legislation steps on several human rights and is inherently damaging and discriminatory.
I am writing this letter to condemn you for making this bill into law. Who a person has sex with or who they decide to spend their lives with should not be a concern of the country. As president you should be protecting human rights, but instead you are violating them. I pray that you will stop passing such inhumane laws in the future.
