Target: Arizona Governor Jan Brewer
Goal: Veto bill making it legal for private businesses to deny services to LGBT persons.
Arizona’s legislature recently passed a bill which would allow business owners with “strong religious beliefs” to refuse service to gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender persons. If it is signed into law, the Arizona government will have legalized discrimination and, in the process, supported the continuation of civil rights atrocities against LGBT persons.
Refusing to serve a person because of their sexual orientation or gender identity is plainly unjust. It is discriminatory and unequal treatment of human beings. This is not any more an expression of religious liberty than it once was to refuse to serve “mixed-race” couples.
While same-sex marriage has been a huge victory for human rights in some states, signing this bill into law would be a huge step backward for the LGBT people of the United States. The nation needs to begin accepting that LGBT people are not going back into the closet. They are here to stay, and choosing not to serve them in order to deny their existence is unacceptable. This bill would send a message that it is okay to treat LGBT persons and couples as inferior, and that is unacceptable.
Fortunately, it is possible that Governor Jan Brewer will veto the bill. Human rights violations aside, it is plainly irresponsible governance for Brewer to sign this bill into law. It is unfair to the LGBT citizens of Arizona and the resulting boycotts to the state’s businesses will harm the economy while Arizona holds $56 billion in debt.
Sign this petition to encourage Governor Brewer to do the right thing for the people and the economy of Arizona.
Dear Governor Jan Brewer,
The bill passed by Arizona’s legislature making it legal for business owners to refuse service to LGBT persons is unjust. If you sign it into law, the state will be authorizing human rights violations on a large scale. Injustice on that scale cannot be signed into law.
Moreover, if Arizona allows this discrimination, other states will be likely to pass similar laws. The United States needs to become more accepting of LGBT persons. Same-sex marriage was a big step for many states, but allowing business owners to refuse service will support denial of LGBT persons’ existence as opposed to teaching acceptance.
Further, at a time when Arizona’s debt is $56 billion, Arizona businesses cannot afford to refuse service. The Arizona economy needs a boost, and passing this law will lead to boycotts rather than profits.
For all these reasons, I urge you to veto this bill. Support acceptance and the economy in Arizona.
