Shut Down Inhumane Hog Farm

Target: Kentucky Livestock Care Standards Commission

Goal: Shut down inhumane hog farm

Iron Maiden Hog Farm in Owensboro, Kentucky was recently found to be feeding ground-up intestines of piglets who had died of a highly contagious diarrheal disease. Their sows, who are locked in gestation crates, were forced to feed upon these intestines. The Humane Society of the United States found that over 900 piglets had died of the diarrheal disease in a two-day period. Not only is feeding parts of sows’ piglets back to them illegal, but also diseased piglets’ intestines carry health risks for the sows. Sadly, this practice appears to be fairly widespread within the industrial sector of the pig industry. Kentucky state law prohibits the feeding of dead pigs to pigs. The federal Swine Health Protection Act is intended to prevent the feeding of unsanitary substances to pigs.

At the farm, the Humane Society of the United States found sows in deplorable conditions.  Sick and injured sows were left without care, including one sow who suffered from an extreme uterine prolapse for nearly two days before dying. Lame sows, whose hind legs became too weak from strict confinement to support their weight, had their legs bound in hobbles to keep their legs from splaying so that they could stand in their crates. Some sows had tight hobbles on for so long that the rope had cut into their flesh or had grown over the rope hobble.

The Kentucky Livestock Care Standards Commission was created to “establish, maintain, or revise standards governing the care and well-being” of farm animals. Tell them to end gestation crate confinement of pigs and to examine the practice of feeding diseased piglets to surviving pigs on the factory farm. This farm needs to be shut down due to the deplorable living condition of the animals.

Dear Kentucky Livestock Care Standards Commission,

Please shut down Iron Maiden Hog Farm in Owensboro, KY. The Humane Society of the United States found in an undercover investigation that the sows were being fed ground-up intestines of their and other sows’ piglets who had died of diarrhea. This is illegal under state law. The sows were also kept in deplorable conditions, many sick and dying. Some had been in hobbles so long they were embedded in their legs.

Iron Maiden Hog Farm does not need to be operating. Not only is it in defiance of state law, it is terribly inhumane. Please shut down this cruel farm.

  1. This is NOT a farm,,it’s a barbaric killing facility, if it resembled anything like a farm these animals would be enjoying life to a limited degree in a thing called fresh sir, grass, sunlight,,instead of being subject to barbaric cruelty and fed crap,,all for the big Yankee Dollar, Kentucky,,close down this vile facility immediately…!.,
