Throw Out Gay Segregation Bill

Target: Arizona Governor Jan Brewer

Goal: Do not pass discriminatory segregation bill into Arizona state law

A bill allowing business owners to deny service based on sexual orientation was recently passed by Arizona’s legislature. The discriminatory bill, which now only awaits the Governor’s approval, cites religious freedom as justification. If passed into law, the bill could see LGBT persons banned from any state business at the discretion of the owner.

The law risks to perpetuate an intolerant anti-gay attitude that has taken decades of advocacy to turn around. While some states are finally making progress with gay rights, others are sanctioning segregation and promoting hatred. Though tolerance and support of all sexual orientations is on the rise, seven states are currently considering segregation bills, with Arizona the only state to pass one so far.

Not only would the law infringe on the equal rights guaranteed by the US constitution, but it could also have a negative effect on the state’s business community. It could subject businesses to the risk of boycott before several major events, including the upcoming Superbowl XLIX, or federal litigation. Some large Arizona companies have even announced that they will be relocating, if the bill passes, in order to protect themselves from such possibilities.

If passed, the law could open the table to discussions of segregation of other minorities and social classes. The backward proposition is damaging to the entire state, and would normalize hatred-based discrimination against the LGBT community. Demand that Governor Jan Brewer reject the bill in order to preserve the right to gay and transgender equality.

Dear Arizona Governor Jan Brewer,

Recently, a bill was passed by Arizona’s legislature that would legalize discrimination against gay and lesbian people in Arizona. If passed into law, Arizona businesses would be allowed to deny service based on sexual orientation, and could result in LGBT persons being banned from otherwise public businesses.

The law would infringe on constitutionally guaranteed equal rights for all citizens, and could damage Arizona’s business community. Companies and businesses based in the states could face federal lawsuits as well as boycotts during upcoming events such as Superbowl XLIX.

The bill proposes to essentially legalize discrimination against gays and lesbians, and is backward in the face of America’s progression toward improving gay rights. I implore you to reject the bill, which would damage not only the state’s reputation and businesses, but would also deny the equal rights that are guaranteed to each American citizen.
