Target: Arizona Legislature
Goal: Overturn law that allows businesses to refuse service to homosexuals
Arizona lawmakers recently passed a bill that allows businesses to refuse service to homosexuals. These businesses are allowed to do so, so long as they assert their religious beliefs. This new law is an outrageously unjust step in the wrong direction that needs to be stopped immediately.
This law uses religion as an excuse; the same excuse that was used against blacks during times of slavery and racial segregation. If these heinous practices of segregation against blacks ended so long ago, why should segregation against sexual orientation now be condoned? This also brings up the issue of addressing who is homosexual. Can businesses just presume that someone who is straight is gay and refuse to serve them? There is no way to prove whether or not people are gay, and this issue will create an environment where businesses can virtually pick and choose who they want to serve. Both gay and straight people will be denied service if they are presumably gay, bases on factors such as appearance, voice, body language, etc.
This law goes far beyond religious freedom into unjust segregation and homophobism, and must be ended immediately. Please sign the petition below to urge Arizona to put an end to this law and instead promote a more accepting environment.
Dear Arizona Legislature,
Your recent bill that allows businesses to refuse services to homosexuals is a tremendously unjust step backwards. Using religion as an excuse to penalize homosexuals; the same excuse that was used to penalize blacks during the times of slavery and segregation, is senseless. The terrible issues of slavery and segregation against blacks have been overcome for a long time, and it is preposterous to practice the same sort of segregation against homosexuals in our current era.
Not only is this law unjust, it is also very poorly constructed. Since there is no way to prove if someone is gay or not, can businesses deny service to someone who they presume is gay? This means that people (both gay and straight) will be denied service based on their appearance, voice, body language, etc. This law will virtually enable businesses to pick and choose who they serve.
This law is an archaic display of homophobism and must be stopped immediately. We ask that you retract this degrading law, and instead promote a more accepting environment in your state.
