Target: President Viktor Yanukovych
Goal: Ensure reforms are passed that limit the power of Ukrainian president
Recently, violence broke in the streets of Kiev, Ukraine, where protesters and police clashed in one of the city’s squares. This led to 26 deaths; police and protesters were included in the death toll. A truce was made, and then immediately broken. The death toll continues to rise. This bloodshed is the result of President Viktor Yanukovych exercising too much of his power, not listening to the people, and resisting reforms to curb his power. With negotiations underway between the president and opposition leaders, reforms must be made to curb Yanukovych’s power.
The situation in Ukraine intensified recently when the Ukrainian president backed out of a trade pact with the European Union. Yanukovych also accepted Russia’s offer of buying $15 billion in Ukrainian debt and slashed gas prices for Kiev, sending the city into a frenzy. Protesters immediately took to the streets, accusing the president of cozying up to Russia. The bloodshed has also caught the attention of international leaders. The foreign ministers from Germany, Poland, and France are set to assess Kiev, report their findings to the European Union, and after conferring with their allies and the U.S., they will set sanctions against Yanukovych’s government.
The Ukrainian people feel that their president hasn’t listened to them and are lashing out with these protests. There are have been attempts to curb his power but Yanukovych has resisted. He has stated that there will be no further attempts to stop the protests at Maidan and it seems that these peace talks might make some progress. But Ukrainians deserve to see reforms and the problem stems from the president himself. Sign this petition and urge Yanukovych to accept new reforms that will curb his power.
Dear President Viktor Yanukovych,
With the recent bloodshed and protests in your country, I am sure you are feeling pressured to appease your citizens and avoid any more conflict. I’m sure you also realize that your people are not happy with your presidency and desperately want change to occur. I am writing this letter to demand that you allow these changes to happen, especially reforms made to curb your power.
I find it appalling that you yourself were able to refuse a trade agreement with the European Union, and accept an offer from Russia that involved Ukraine’s debt and gas prices. I do not think one person should have that much power, and I can see why the Ukrainian people would find that outrageous. In these peace talks you should be open minded and flexible to the changes proposed by your people.
