Target: President Obama
Goal: Commend President Obama’s increased fuel efficiency standards for heavy trucks
President Obama is set to order the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation to create new fuel efficiency standards for medium and heavy-duty trucks by March of 2016. Companies that opt to join an existing public-private partnership for energy-efficient vehicles will receive special resources and technical advice from the U.S. Department of Energy. By relying on federal agencies such as the EPA and DOT to develop new efficiency standards, President Obama is effectively bypassing the United States Congress, which has been slow to enact legislation to reduce global warming. He should be commended for his use of executive power to increase fuel efficiency for trucks.
Under the new standards, pickup trucks, combination tractors, vans, and vocational vehicles will be required to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 20 percent. These new standards are projected to save 530 million barrels of oil and $50 billion in fuel costs each year.
The move by Obama to increase fuel efficiency for trucks independent of Congress is similar to a tactic he used to force power plants to adhere to tougher emission standards. He is able to rely on the authority he holds over government agencies such as the EPA to help combat global warming, rather than relying on Congress. Given the urgency of the fight against climate change, bold actions such as this are necessary to reduce emissions sooner rather than later.
President Obama has demonstrated good leadership by sidestepping Congress to enforce stricter emissions requirements for trucks. Please sign this petition and commend President Obama’s actions to combat global warming by reducing truck emissions.
Dear President Obama:
I am writing to commend you on your recent initiative to combat climate change by creating stricter emissions standards for medium and heavy-duty vehicles. Global warming is an urgent issue that demands fast action from our leaders. These new standards set a great example and are a step in the right direction on our nations path towards energy efficiency.
I encourage you to follow through on this initiative and not hesitate to rely on your executive authority to reduce carbon emissions wherever and however you can. Thank you for your leadership in our nation’s efforts to combat global warming.
