Target: Oregon State Legislature
Goal: Inform consumers of dangerous chemicals in children’s products
Dangerous chemicals such as arsenic, cadmium, formaldehyde and mercury have been found in many products manufactured for children. Toy and chemical companies are often aware of this, but prefer that consumers remain uninformed. The Oregon state legislature is currently considering legislation that would force toy companies to disclose products that contain chemicals that are harmful to children. We should encourage the Oregon state legislature to pass this bill and protect children from dangerous products.
Under current law, chemical and toy companies are not required to inform consumers about the dangerous chemicals contained in products sold for use by children. Unscrupulous companies prefer that parents remain ignorant in order to protect profits. Up until now these companies have also managed to convince the government that it is unnecessary to regulate these dangerous substances. According to industry lobbyists, it would be too much of a hardship to inform parents of these hazardous products. The fact is, these companies know that if parents were aware of these hazards they would not buy their products.
Washington State has already passed a similar law that keeps parents informed of potentially hazardous chemicals in products marketed to children. It is time for the Oregon legislature to step up and protect children in Oregon from products containing mercury, formaldehyde, arsenic, and other hazardous chemicals. Parents deserve to have the information necessary to protect their children. The safety of children should not be compromised to save toy manufacturers and chemical companies the burden of disclosing the contents of their products. Please sign this petition and ensure that parents receive the information necessary to protect their children.
Dear Oregon State Legislators:
It has come to my attention that under current state law, chemical and toy companies are not required to inform consumers about the dangerous chemicals contained in products sold to be used by children. Chemicals such as arsenic, cadmium, formaldehyde and mercury have been found in many products manufactured for children. It is important that parents be informed of these hazardous chemicals so that they may take precautions to protect the health of their children.
In order for parents to have the appropriate information to protect their children, it is important that SB 1569 be passed as soon as possible. This would require manufacturers to disclose the contents of dangerous chemicals in products intended for children, empowering parents to keep their children safe. Please pass SB 1569 without further delay.
