Target: Secretary of State Kim Wyman
Goal: Applaud Washington’s decision to support same-sex marriage
In Washington, thousands of same-sex couples can now rejoice as the state makes the decision to convert domestic partnerships to marriages, making them eligible and legally entitled to the same benefits allotted to married heterosexual couples.
Joining states like Connecticut and New Hampshire, Washington will legalize the unions of approximately 6,500 same-sex couples who are currently in domestic partnerships or have planned to get married but decided against a civil union. The change will mark the final chapter of the state’s same-sex marriage limbo which began in 2007, when Washington became one of the first states to grant ‘marriage-like’ benefits to gay and lesbian couples.
The victory, however savory, is not without its drawbacks, as it has been reported that hundreds of same-sex couples have dissolved their civil unions due in part to the state’s murky outline of the benefits and rights given to same-sex couples under domestic partnerships. Despite this, same -sex couples will now have their domestic rights protected as partners become eligible for tax benefits, estate benefits, government benefits, employment benefits, medical benefits and familial benefits, among others. Washington also has plans for a clause that will protect marriages performed in the state from discrimination across borders, marking this move as one of the more progressive decisions made since the same-sex marriage debate in the nation ensued.
By signing this petition you’ll thank Secretary of State Kim Wyman for her affirmative stance on gay marriage and efforts to increase visibility and respect for same-sex couples in the state.
Dear Kim Wyman,
As a staunch supporter of LGBT rights I would like to thank you for your recent decision to grant same-sex couples the right to marry legally in your state. This progressive move is more than a simple victory, but a landmark in the fight for equality in the LGBT community.
The journey towards equality has not been an easy one, but your compassion and liberality have instilled a sense of peace upon the couples living in Washington state, as they no longer have to worry about the legality of their unions or their partner’s benefits being seized as they travel beyond state borders.
Thank you for your valorous efforts and I truly hope that you continue to be an advocate for the LGBT community.
