Target: Susan Wagle, Republican President of the Kansas Senate
Goal: Commend Senator Susan Wagle for opposing a Kansas bill that promotes discrimination
The Republican leaders of Kansas are planning to take up a new bill which would allow religious groups to openly discriminate and shun same-sex couples without any legal repercussions. It will potentially legalize discrimination towards gay and lesbian couples, which is slightly reminiscent of the treatment African Americans were subjected to during the days of segregation.
According to the terms of the bill, any person with sincere religious beliefs will be allowed to refuse to provide any public service, foster care, employment opportunities, etc. to any person who is gay or lesbian without facing any legal consequences. Furthermore, they would also be able to refuse to treat any same-sex marriage or civil union as valid.
The most terrifying part of this new bill is that since it will apply to government workers, police officers could potentially be able to refuse to come to the assistance of same-sex couples. This bill is raising many fears and concerns, so many that even the Republican President of the Senate, Susan Wagle, is beginning to object the new bill. Her intervention has effectively halted the bill in its current form. Sign this petition to applaud her for taking a stand.
Dear Senator Wagle,
It has come to my attention that Republican leaders in Kansas are planning to take up a new bill which will potentially allow religious groups to openly discriminate and shun same-sex couples without any legal consequences. I would like to thank you for deciding to object to this new bill.
Upon hearing the terms of this bill, I was overwhelmingly appalled. I believe that you would agree with the notion that this new bill would have caused our country to regress several decades back to the days of segregation against African Americans in the South. If this bill was passed, many people who are gay or lesbians would be completely helpless to stop the discrimination they would face in Kansas. It is even worse when you realize that since the bill applies to government workers, police officers would be able to refuse to come to the assistance of same-sex couples.
I would like to thank you again for all your efforts in opposing this new bill. Discriminatory behavior towards another person because of their sexual orientation should never be condoned.
