Put Warning Labels on Sugary Beverages

Target: California Legislature

Goal: Support proposed bill that would put warnings on sugary beverages

California has recently proposed a bill that would legally require the placement of warning labels on sodas and other varieties of sugary beverages. This comes after recent studies that revealed how dangerous excessive sugar can actually be to human health. This public health-oriented bill deserves appreciation and support as it undergoes the process of being signed into law.

The proposed law would require any beverage with sweeteners that contain 75 calories for every 12 ounces or more to have a warning label. The warning label would state: “STATE OF CALIFORNIA SAFETY WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay.” Recent studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that any sugar consumption that exceeds the amount that is in one soda or a bowl of sugary cereal per day can increase chances of heart disease, diabetes, or excess weight gain. The study states that “The average American diet contains enough added sugar to increase the risk of heart-related death by 18%”. It also mentions that eating approximately 420 calories from added sugar from a diet of about 2,000 calories more than doubles the risk of death from heart disease.

These facts are astonishing, especially in a society whose diet includes sugar in such excess. It is important to make people aware of the risks of the substances they are consuming, and give them the option to make alternate choices. Warning labels would be helpful in providing the incentive to choose healthier alternatives, just as legally required health labels on cigarettes have helped to steer people away from smoking cigarettes. Requiring warning labels on sugary beverages is such a simple step that could potentially improve the health of many, so it would be senseless to ignore this law.

Please sign the petition below to help make the law requiring warning labels on sugary beverages in California a reality.

Dear California Legislature,

Your recently drafted law that would require warning labels on excessively sugary beverages is a positive step toward awareness and public health. Recent studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have revealed how dangerous the amounts of sugar that the average American consumes can be to health. It is important to create awareness about these dangers to consumers.

These warning labels will be beneficial in creating awareness just as warning labels on cigarettes have helped create awareness and prevent individuals from using them. This law will surely help consumers choose alternatives and create a healthier lifestyle. Thank you for your positive efforts, and please continue to make further efforts on behalf of public health.
