Target: Dale Hansen, Sportscaster for WFAA-TV
Goal: Commend Dale Hansen for using his air time to call out the hypocrisy of those who are uncomfortable with openly gay players in the National Football League
Michael Sam, defensive lineman for The University of Missouri, recently came out publicly and could become the first openly gay National Football League player. While there was largely support for his public announcement, some NFL officials and coaches have expressed concern about accepting an openly gay player into the NFL. Dale Hansen, a sportscaster for Dallas-Fort Worth’s ABC affiliate, took to the airwaves to counter that point of view, standing up for Sam and calling out the NFL’s hypocrisy all at the same time.
Hansen rightly challenged the fact that rapists and drunk drivers are all still considered top picks for NFL drafts, yet being an openly gay player somehow seriously jeopardizes that opportunity. It is time that one of America’s most heavily masculinized sports finally breaks the taboo against homosexuality and joins the overwhelming movement of Americans who support and stand up for gay rights. Sign this petition and thank Hansen for using his platform to spread the message that discrimination based on sexual orientation is no longer tolerated in this country.
Dear Mr. Hansen,
Recently you took the time on your news segment to support Michael Sam’s decision to publicly come out. Your segment was not only welcomed, it was a necessary acknowledgement of the hypocrisy that is so evident within the NFL. You clearly conveyed how important it is for the professional football community to become an open and accepting place for gay individuals.
Because of your public remarks, so many more people will realize how truly absurd it is that the same community accepting of a rapist could not be accepting of an openly gay player. Thank you for taking a stand against those who don’t support Michael’s decision, and for doing so in such a meaningful, thought-provoking way. It’s people like you who will help lead the way in changing the archaic opinions some still hold concerning gay rights.
