Target: President Francois Hollande and MISCA
Goal: Protect the Muslim minority in Central Africa
Muslim minorities are being targeted in Central African Republic by Christian militias, in an attempt to ethnically cleanse the region. Their efforts are forcing these communities to flee the nation to find safety, but despite the presence of peacekeepers from France and African forces, very little has been done to protect them. These peacekeepers must do more to ensure that the loss of innocent lives is prevented.
Last year, the Central African Republic descended into chaos when Muslim rebel forces ousted President François Bozizé. These rebels call themselves Seleka but were pushed out of power by Christian militias known as the anti-balaka, and are showing no mercy for Muslim civilians. The Seleka group has made coordinated efforts in the past 10 months to torture, rape, pillage, and kill Christian villagers. International powers allowed the anti-balaka forces to take over, but it has led to a bloody revenge campaign as the Christian forces now strike back at Muslims.
There are currently 1,600 French troops and 6,000 African troops who are part of the African Union-led peacekeeping force known as MISCA. It is crucial that these peacekeeping forces do more to ensure the safety and security of the people. There are people who have lived in the region for centuries but now are being uprooted by religious violence. Experts believe that there is a very real chance that the Muslim minority could be wiped out from the region. Urge the peacekeeping forces to do their job and prevent anymore innocent lives from being lost.
Dear President Francois Hollande and MISCA,
I am writing this letter to discuss the violence plaguing the Central African Republic, and the lack of protection given to civilians. The Seleka, a Muslim group, formerly seized power but used it to rape, torture, and kill Christian villagers. International powers allowed the Christian militias – known as the anti-balaka – to take control, and they are now on a revenge campaign, slaughtering Muslims and forcing others to flee the country.
Whether or not you believe this revenge is justified, the fact of the matter is, innocent people are being targeted. Some of these people may have had nothing to do with either groups, but are being targeted because of their religion. I am urging both the president of France, and MISCA, to do more to protect the Muslim civilians. Human rights are being severely violated and you both have the power to do something.
