Applaud Urban Farming Solution

Target: Thousands Win founders Caleb Freese and Julian Hensarling

Goal: Commend innovative, sustainable approach to rooftop gardening

Environmentalists and farmers Caleb Freese and Julian Hensarling decided to bring their passion and inspiration to urban gardening in a rather surprising business sector: craft beer. Childhood friends reunited in Brooklyn, Freese and Hensarling drew on their shared backgrounds in organic farming and creativity to bring to life the vision of a functional rooftop green space for the cultivation of hops, one of the four main ingredients for brewing beer and a crop that had nearly gone missing from New York fields a decade ago. The duo founded Thousands Win “upon our shared love for our community, honoring traditions, perfecting a craft and above all improving our environment.”

Freese brought his brewing knowledge and hops-growing expertise to the table, and the pride of Thousands Win is the company’s ultra-local, sustainable hops. Hensarling, the brains behind the green engineering, managed to solve one of the biggest problem that befalls rooftop gardens and holds back the urban gardening movement: the sheer weight of water-soaked soil. He created a planter that provides the benefits of a green roof – including absorption of rainwater, filtering of airborne particles, and protection from heat – without causing structural or water damage, by attaching to the load-bearing edges of the roof as opposed to merely sitting in the middle of it. This revolutionary idea has not only provided a brilliant new way to locally and sustainably produce hops and other vine crops, it also represents a community landmark and gathering place where Thousands Win encourages community members to learn about sustainable urban farming and participate in events.

By signing this petition, you are thanking Julian Hensarling and Caleb Freese for their innovative solution to the unique problems presented in urban farming and for their dedication to building a local, sustainable, community-based economy.

Dear Julian Hensarling and Caleb Freese,

The work you have done through Thousands Win is inspiring to small business owners, urban farmers, and everyone with a passion for protecting the environment. By envisioning and creating a solution to the heaviness of rooftop gardens, you have revolutionized urban farming and sustainability. This solution opens up a world of possibilities in terms of viable green space in our cities and local urban production.

Thank you for emphasizing the importance of sustainable local farming, and for proving that it is possible even in urban areas. I hope that you continue to spread your message throughout the community and beyond.
