Support Free Education Program for Impoverished Children

Target: Somalia’s Ministry of Education

Goal: Support Somalia’s Ministry of Education in their efforts to provide education to poor children

There are some private schools in Somalia that offer education for young children; sadly very few Somali parents are able to afford to pay the tuitions for these schools due to the fact that they live in a country suffering from extreme poverty. Less than 50 percent of Somali children attend primary school. Go2School, the free education program that is made possible by Somalia’s Ministry of Education and donations from UNICEF, gives the children of Somalia the opportunity to get the education they couldn’t afford to receive before. This program is commendable and deserves our support.

Somali children who are unable to attend school usually end up in the streets doing cheap labor.  Many of them are in danger of being targeted as potential recruits for terrorist groups. One of the goals of this free education program is to bring lost children away from the streets and into classrooms. So far, the program has successfully enrolled over 35,000 students in 16 schools across the country.

Schools are expensive to run and UNICEF is encouraging its donors to keep this program alive. In a country with one of the worst literacy rates in the world, this program opens the door to many possibilities in the future for these children. Although the country’s corrupt background may raise questions about the program’s sustainability, the gleeful and proud smiles of the children who eagerly come to school each day should be enough motivation for the Ministry of Education and its donors to keep this program running. Commend the Ministry of Education for providing free education to these children.

Dear Ministry of Education of Somalia,

Your efforts to give the children of Somalia the opportunity to attend school is indeed commendable. The children are the future and I would like to thank you for recognizing the importance of their education.

Since many children were previously unable to attend school due to the fact that they live in poverty, I believe that your actions have an extremely positive effect on their lives. Without the Go2School program, many Somali children would be doing cheap labor for most of their lives. However, with the free education program they have the chance to become future teachers and doctors.

Please do not stop your efforts to help give these children an education. The Go2School program will guide the children of Somalia so that they may achieve their true potential.
