Target: Kenny Thompson
Goal: Thank parent for paying off 60 elementary school students’ debt so they can eat hot meals again
Recently a school in Utah made national headlines when they took prepared hot lunches away from a handful of elementary school students, threw the lunches away, and gave the students fruit and milk instead. Because these students’ families were behind on payments, the school thought that the children should be denied hot meals and given an inadequate nutritional substitute of a piece of fruit and a carton of milk. When a man in Texas named Kenny Thompson heard about this problem, he was outraged. He also did something about it. He marched into his local Houston, Texas school and checked to see if this type of situation was occurring there, too.
As an involved member of the community, Kenny Thompson tutors and mentors students, in addition to being a parent himself. He was horrified when he found out how many students were receiving inadequate nutrition due to the exact same situation that had occurred in Utah. Schools call the alternative lunches “reduced,” but the truth is that a piece of fruit and a carton of milk, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or even a cheese sandwich is neither enough food nor a nutritionally diverse enough lunch to satisfy a growing child and allow him or her to focus on the true purpose of school: learning.
Upon learning about this atrocious behavior by the schools, Kenny Thompson went above and beyond what most people would do. He spent $465 to wipe the slate clean for more than 60 students. Congratulate this upstanding citizen for doing what was right. Thank Kenny Thompson for paying off the debt of over sixty students so that they can receive proper lunches again.
Dear Kenny Thompson,
As a parent and an active community member, you were scandalized when you heard that an elementary school in Utah denied students hot lunches because their accounts were delinquent. You weren’t just shocked, though. You decided to investigate this situation further. You went to local schools in your area and asked if the same thing was happening there.
What you learned is just part of the awful truth about how our schools function. Students who could not afford the hot lunches were being provided with “reduced” lunches. Sometimes these reduced lunches consisted of a piece of fruit and a carton of milk. Sometimes the students just received a cheese sandwich. Either way, the students were not receiving appropriate alternatives to the hot lunches. Instead, they were receiving nutritionally inadequate substitutes, in addition to being alienated and shamed because of their economic situation.
You could not live with this. You took close to $500 of your own money and cleared over sixty students’ names. Now they have access to hot meals again, which will help them focus on their schoolwork. Thank you for your generosity — what you did will never be forgotten. You are an outstanding human being for paying off the debt of these sixty students, and I hope that your actions will inspire others to do the same.
