Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Appoint federal judges with a history of public service
Out of President Obama’s judicial appointments so far, only 4% have backgrounds in public interest legal practices, while the rest were corporate attorneys or prosecutors, as stated by U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren in an interview. Government power has become overwhelmingly focused on serving corporate interests, often at the expense of the public. President Obama has an opportunity right now to reverse this trend, and he needs to take this opportunity seriously.
Senator Warren claims that so many of the president’s judicial appointments have corporate backgrounds because congressional Republicans have made it extremely difficult to appoint anyone else by blocking many of the President’s nominees. However, a simple majority in the Senate will now have the authority to approve the President’s appointees, and therefore President Obama has a perfect opportunity to appoint judges with a history of public service.
Thanks to a barrage of laissez-faire deregulation over the last 20 years, private industries have gained a huge advantage over the voting public in influencing legislation. Senator Warren’s position on federal judge nominations points to a larger truth about our political landscape. We need a judicial system that favors the public and individual citizens’ rights over special business interests. Sign the petition to urge President Obama to follow Senator Warren’s advice.
Dear President Obama,
Senator Elizabeth Warren has stated that the vast majority of your judicial appointments so far have a background in corporate law, in large part because congressional Republicans have blocked so many of your nominees. As Senator Warren explains, right now it will only take a simple majority in the Senate to approve your judicial appointees, giving you a great opportunity to appoint judges with a history of public service.
You have campaigned on the promise to protect the public and individual citizens from the rampant and unchecked influence of corporate money in politics. Please live up to this promise by appointing federal judges with backgrounds in public service. Business interests have hijacked most of the democratic process, and at this point companies are rewriting our laws to increase their profits. We need a judicial system that protects the people, and you have the power to make that happen. Please make it a priority to appoint judges with an interest in serving the public.
