Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Commend the Obama administration for creating hubs of information about climate change to help farmers adapt
Recently, the Obama administration passed an executive order that will create seven regional “climate hubs,” which will supply information to help farmers adapt to the effects of climate change. The hubs will help farmers respond to climate change impacts including events such as drought, wild fires, floods and invasive pests. This order is one of seven orders the president will issue battling climate change. With Congress stagnating and not taking action, this new order will be a relief for farmers and should be commended.
The hubs will be placed in Ames, Iowa; Durham, N.H.; Raleigh, N.C.; Fort Collins, Colo.; El Reno, Okla.; Corvallis, Ore.; and Las Cruces, N.M. The hubs will be placed at existing facilities and will not receive further funding.
In the past several years, farmers have suffered greatly at the hands of climate change. The industry suffered tremendously during the drought of 2012, and between the years 2011 and 2013, a longstanding drought caused the American economy to lose $50 billion, much of that in the agricultural sector. Because of climate change, several issues will rise up and torment farmers. Some of these issues include a decline in livestock and crop production because of a rise in weeds, diseases, and pests, soil degradation, and a potential for food disruption in the near future. The hub will help farmers adapt to an environment that is changing every year and better prepare them.
It will take years to several decades for the problems of climate change to be solved on our planet. Until then, our government needs to fix and respond to the problem. These regional climate hubs will aid farmers as countries around the world try to resolve the issue of greenhouse gasses and fossil fuels. Commend the Obama administration for taking steps to prepare our country for the effects of climate change.
Dear President Obama,
I realize that you have passed several executive orders recently, since Congress has not taken action on many important topics. One of these topics is climate change, and I am grateful that you are taking steps to prepare our country for the worst. The seven regional climate hubs will no doubt help our farmers deal with the ever changing climate. So far, the seasons are not normal and continuously shift on a yearly basis.
I hope you will continue to prepare our country for the worst, as the issue of climate change will not resolve itself in a matter of years. It may take several decades for the planet to heal itself and in that time, devastating change could wreck havoc upon our farmlands. I wish to commend you for your efforts and I hope you will keep our environment out of harm’s way.
