Target: David Long, President of the Indiana State Senate
Goal: Prevent bill that seeks to limit protections for the environment
Advances in environmental protection may soon be stopped up by legislation currently pending in Indiana. The legislation is heavily favored by state industries that wish to sacrifice public health and the environment in favor of corporate profits. The Indiana House of Representatives has already passed the bill with a 40-vote margin. With the Indiana State Senate set to vote soon, it is important that we tell the Indiana state legislature to reject this bill.
According to Beverly Gard, a former Republican state senator who currently leads Indiana’s Environmental Rules Board, the bill would effectively prevent the Indiana Department of Environmental Management from doing its job. It is important that state legislatures have the power to enact rules independently of the federal government – they must often address environmental concerns that are not national issues, but are relevant to a particular state. In the case of Indiana for example, the large amounts of manure produced by the state’s big livestock farms are an important environmental concern that is not addressed by federal rules.
A similar bill was recently passed in Michigan but was vetoed by Governor Rick Snyder, who is a Republican. Governor Snyder had concerns about the bill’s potential to undermine Michigan’s ability to create and enforce environmental regulations at the state level.
The bottom line is that each state has unique characteristics that make it necessary to enact environmental regulations that complement federal legislation. Prohibiting state legislatures from enacting these types of regulations can only be beneficial to corporations seeking to exploit state resources for the sake of making a profit. Indiana is on the verge of passing legislation that would render its own officials powerless in protecting the environment and controlling pollution within the state of Indiana. Please sign the petition to encourage the Indiana State Senate to reject this bill.
Dear Senator David Long:
I am writing to you regarding the new legislation that is currently under consideration in Indiana that would prevent state leaders from creating environmental protections that are more stringent than federal standards. This legislation would effectively prevent your state government from creating rules necessary to protect its citizens from potential environmental hazards.
Like every other state, Indiana has unique characteristics that make it necessary to enact environmental regulations that complement federal legislation. Prohibiting your own legislature from enacting these types of regulations can only be beneficial to corporations seeking to exploit state resources for the sake of making a profit. I strongly encourage you to take action within the Indiana State Senate to prevent this legislation from passing.
