Target: California Democratic Party Chairman John Burton
Goal: Endorse women’s rights advocate Sandra Fluke’s campaign for Congress
Women’s rights advocate Sandra Fluke has recently sent a request to the California Democratic Party seeking an endorsement in the upcoming race for a California seat in the U.S. House.
Fluke is best known for testifying before Congress about the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that religious institutions cover birth control in their health insurance policies. She said that during her time as a law student at Georgetown University, a Catholic institution, the school’s refusal to cover birth control created financial and emotional hardship for her and many other female students. Later, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh referred to her as a “slut” and a “prostitute” on his show because she admitted to using contraceptives. He was later forced to apologize after the uproar following his comments extended to both those on the right and the left.
While the race for this House seat is crowded with several worthy candidates, Fluke’s status as a well-known women’s rights advocate will put sustained pressure on those in Congress who continue to fight against common-sense legislation to support the needs of women around this country.
The fight for access to contraceptives, abortions and other women’s rights issues is being continually waged in all levels of government around the country, and it is doubly important to have people in Congress willing to fight to ensure that women have access to affordable health necessities.
Sign this petition to call on the California Democratic Party to endorse Fluke’s campaign and help put this women’s rights crusader in Congress.
Dear California Democratic Party Chairman John Burton,
Sandra Fluke, famous for her testimony about contraceptive coverage in the Affordable Care Act and her subsequent and reprehensible treatment by right wing radio host Rush Limbaugh, has recently filed a request for endorsement by the California Democratic Party in her campaign for the U.S. House. Fluke’s bravery in the days after her testimony and her continued efforts to fight for women’s health issues, not to mention the name-recognition her campaign would have, show that she would be a legitimate contender for office and a force for women’s issues once elected.
I am writing you to encourage you and your organization to show support for Fluke’s campaign and to give your endorsement for her run for Congress. The endorsement of the state party would go a long way in legitimizing her campaign. Please help Fluke in her efforts to fight for women’s health issues.
