Commend Swift Apprehension of Animal Brutalizer

Target: Prosecutor Emmanuel Merlin

Goal: Applaud the quick arrest and conviction of the creator of a disturbing animal abuse video

Recently, a disturbing animal abuse video was posted on Facebook by a man from France, 24-year-old Farid Ghilas. The video shows Ghilas throwing a four-month-old white and orange kitten, Oscar, into the side of a building, and the cat mewling in pain as it hits the concrete sidewalk below. Another shows Ghilas tossing the same cat several stories into the air before it lands in a nearby bush. Both him and his companion were laughing throughout the video.

The kitten was found alive, and taken to a veterinarian where it was surgically treated for a broken foot and internal injuries. The cat had been wandering the street when it was Ghilas and his companion encountered it. The owner was notified and reunited with their pet.

Internet users were able to quickly determine the personal information of the abuser through Facebook. French police and animal welfare organizations were bombarded with reports of the video after it went viral. Not only French citizens, but people from all over the world contacted French officials with the complaints.

French police responded quickly. Just over a week later, Farid Ghilas was taken into custody, while police are still trying to identify the companion that recorded the video. Ghilas, who has eight prior criminal convictions, was found guilty of animal cruelty by a French court. He was sentenced to a year in prison, and is forbidden from owning pets.

Such shocking and barbaric cruelty must not be allowed to go unpunished in a civilized society. Commend French officials for quickly apprehending and convicting the abuser.

Dear Prosecutor Emmanuel Merlin,

Recently, a Frenchman posted a brutal video to Facebook in which he threw a cat against the side of a housing unit, and again up into the air and into a bush. After the video went viral, French officials worked to quickly apprehend the man in the video and his companion.

Though his companion has not yet been identified, the creator of the video was arrested just over one week later and charged with animal cruelty. The court sentenced him to a one year jail sentence, as well as forbade him from owning any pets.

In a civil and modern society, there is no place for brutal animal abusers like Mr. Ghilas. Thank you for bringing this man to justice quickly, and for suggesting an appropriate jail sentence for this multiple-time offender.

  1. Thank God the kitten was rescued and treated.

  2. So happy the kitten was rescued and treated.

  3. I wonder why no one has commented on the fact that this kitten was wandering and that the owner did not keep the kitten in his home. Is it that this owner is typical of so many lazy, ignorant, disgusting owners who allow their cat to roam as they don’t want to be bothered, say, with cat litter. This owner is as guilty as the bum who tossed the kitten into the side of a building.
