Target: Christiane Taubira, French Justice Minister
Goal: Commend French authorities for sentencing cat abuser to one year in prison
A 24-year-old man in Marseille, France was recently sentenced to one year in prison for posting videos to his Facebook page that show him repeatedly abusing a kitten. Thanks in part to a petition signed by 260,000 animal lovers, the French government chose to prosecute the man to the full extent of the law. This sends a clear message that this type of animal abuse will not be tolerated. We should commend French authorities for treating this crime so seriously.
Farid Ghilas was arrested after the video that shows him abusing the kitten was posted on Facebook. One video features the man hurling the kitten into a building. The kitten bounces off the wall and comes crashing down onto a concrete sidewalk. Another clip shows the kitten being tossed dozens of feet through the air into a bush. Under French law Mr. Ghilas could have received up to two years in prison and a fine of 30,000 euros for these actions. Fortunately, Oscar, the 4-month-old kitten that suffered the abuse was not killed. Oscar is currently being treated by France’s national animal welfare organization for a broken foot and stomach injuries.
The video clearly shows the severe trauma to which the kitten was subjected. Mr. Ghilas has told the court he regrets the act. However, the fact that he chose to post video of the incident on his Facebook shows that he found some amusement in his actions. “He acted with a singular perversity and sadism that has shocked the entire planet,” commented Emmanuel Merlin, the French prosecutor.
The actions of Farid Ghilas that are depicted in these videos are cruel and barbaric. The fact that Mr. Ghilas found the torture of this kitten amusing enough to share on Facebook makes the incident even more troubling. The 260,000 people who took action to demand justice managed to convince the French government to issue a severe sentence for these crimes. We should commend the authorities in France for acting in the interests of animal welfare by appropriately punishing this barbaric act.
Dear Christiane Taubira:
I am pleased that the French Government has chosen to punish Farid Ghilas for the sadistic behavior he exhibited in severely torturing a kitten and posting videos of the incident on Facebook. This was a sadistic action that horrified many French citizens as well as many people around the world.
In issuing a severe sentence for this individual, the French government has sent a clear message that this type of animal cruelty will not be tolerated. Hopefully this will help to deter other potential animal abusers in the future and save other defenseless animals from a similar ordeal.
