Target: President Xi Jinping
Goal: Commend China for banning smoking in schools
It’s no secret that tobacco smoke is a leading cause of death. It kills nearly 5 million smokers every year. The tragedy is that about 600,000 non-smokers will also die from exposure to secondhand smoke. Approximately 165,000 children die each year from smoking-related illnesses. China’s recent decision to ban smoking in public schools all across their country will make their schools much safer by protecting their students from exposure to secondhand smoke.
The smoking ban in China’s schools is only the beginning. In December, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced that lawmakers are considering imposing another smoking ban by the end of this year. This new ban will prohibit smoking in public places all over the nation. This is great news because it will reduce the amount of tobacco smoke in the air. There are many chemicals in tobacco smoke that are known to cause several illnesses and diseases. Tobacco smoke also contains carcinogens which are known to cause cancer.
China’s actions to protect its people from the hazards of secondhand smoking is indeed commendable. The new ban will save many people from becoming victims of the awful carcinogens and other chemicals in tobacco smoke. There will be less air pollution from cigarette smoke. Only positive results can stem from the smoking ban – the people will benefit greatly from cleaner air with less secondhand smoke. Applaud China for implementing a ban on smoking in schools.
Dear President Xi Jinping,
I would like to thank you for your action against smoking in schools. Children are the future, which is why it is so important that we take care of their health. The students of your nation will benefit greatly from the new smoking ban. They will be able to go to school without breathing in the many hazardous chemicals and carcinogens that come from cigarette smoke.
The steps you have taken toward preventing secondhand smoke are encouraging, and your concern for the health of your people is admirable. I believe that the public smoking ban that you are planning to impose this year will be extremely beneficial to not only the children, but also all the people of China. I hope you decide to follow through on that plan.
Your actions clearly show you truly care about the lives of the citizens of your nation. Thank you for everything you’ve done to prevent secondhand smoke from affecting non-smokers.
