Target: Senator Debbie Stabenow, Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry
Goal: Support amendment to the Farm Bill that will protect organic farms
U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley has proposed an amendment to the new Farm Bill that would allow for more comprehensive federal insurance coverage of organic farms. Until now, organic farmers have faced more obstacles in attaining federal crop insurance than other farmers, and those organic farmers who have received federal insurance have paid higher premiums than other farmers. Beyond providing better federal insurance, Senator Merkley’s amendment will provide more funding for organic farming research and a new program to help market organic foods.
For decades, massive mono-cropping operations owned by the largest corporations in the U.S. have received huge government subsidies and comprehensive insurance, while non-corporate and organic farms have been left to fend for themselves, with fewer resources and no support. Senator Merkley’s amendment will finally provide a level of security to organic farming operations that they have never had before. It is very important for the agricultural health of our nation that this bill passes with Merkley’s amendment as written.
The reason the cheapest foods in America are so unhealthy is because our government provides so much assistance to enormous mono-cropping operations. This policy has caused the price of corn to drop so low that foods made from corn by-products are both ubiquitous and absurdly cheap. The provisions of the new Farm Bill are long overdue, and the protection of healthful food is imperative. Sign the petition to urge congressional support for this bill and Senator Merkley’s amendment.
Dear Senator Stabenow,
The new Farm Bill, and in particular Senator Merkley’s amendment to this bill, would be an enormous boon to our agricultural economy. For decades, major corporations have benefited from federal assistance in massive mono-cropping operations; this has led to cheap and ubiquitous corn by-products in the American diet, which most physicians contend is the primary cause of obesity. We could not be in more need of organic farmers.
Senator Merkley’s amendment would provide funding for organic crop research, improved marketing for organic foods, and most importantly, would provide more comprehensive and fairly priced federal insurance for organic farms. Please support this bill and help ensure that it passes with Senator Merkley’s amendment intact.
