Promote Health in the Workplace

Target: United States Senate

Goal: Promote healthier lifestyles by requiring all U.S. workplaces to allow their employees the option of standing during their work day

Recent studies have revealed shocking evidence about how dangerous prolonged sitting is to the human body, posing health dangers to the individuals who sit at work for long periods of time. These realizations should ideally create workplace environments that provide options conducive to employee health.

Sitting has been proven to be damaging to many parts of your body. It raises cholesterol and blood pressure, significantly increasing your likelihood of acquiring cardiovascular disease. In fact, people who sit for prolonged periods of time are 50% more likely to die of a heart attack. It is also linked to issues with internal organs such as the pancreas and colon and raises the risk of getting certain types of cancers. Sitting also causes several issues with muscle and bone structure. It contributes to a degeneration of the abs, glutes, and legs, causing weakness. It also slows brain activity, making it harder to think and effectively complete tasks. These examples have lead many experts to conclude that prolonged sitting is more harmful than smoking. It is suggested that even exercising after sitting all day is ineffective because the damage done to the body while sitting is so severe.

For these reasons, it is important that we create a more active and healthy society. Although we cannot force everyone to stand all day long, it is important that we provide everybody with the option of standing in their workplace to decrease the damage done to their bodies. It should be mandatory that workplaces provide standing desks for their employees to work at, and/or allow breaks to get up and walk around. After all, people are no longer allowed to smoke in their work places, so they should not be required to do something that is just as damaging if not more so.

Please sign the petition below to urge the United States Senate to pass a law requiring places of business to allow their employees the option to stand:

Dear United States Senate:

Recent research has revealed the numerous harmful consequences of sitting to the human body. It creates cardiovascular issues, making prolonged sitters 50% more likely to have a heart attack, and increases the risk of certain types of cancers, causing degenerative muscle and bone issues, and limits brain function. Many experts suggest that prolonged sitting is even more dangerous to the human body than smoking.

For these reasons, it is imperative that workers who generally sit at work have the option to stand if they want to reduce the harm done to their body. There should be a mandate that places of work provide standing desks to people who would like to use them. Businesses should also allow their employees a few breaks during the day to walk around, so they are not completely stationary. Things that are detrimental to health such as smoking has been banned from the workplace for a long time, so employees should not be forced to sit all day , which is perhaps even more harmful than smoking.

Please take action to devise a law that mandates places of work to grant their employees the option to stand for the sake of their health.
