Punish School for Taking Lunch Away from Elementary Students

Target: Salt Lake City School district officials

Goal: Fire school officials who threw away the lunches of elementary school children who owed money

School officials in a Salt Lake City, Utah elementary school recently took and threw away the lunches of dozens of children who had zero or negative balances in their lunch account, causing a very upsetting scene. Children were very confused as to what was occurring, and many were left embarrassed, crying and hungry. These children were then given milk and a piece of fruit to replace their lunches that were thrown in the trash.

These actions were both ridiculous and uncalled for. It was wasteful and immature to throw away whole lunches that could have been consumed by children. Replacing them with milk and a piece of fruit only cost them more money, and upset many students. Children at an elementary school level should not be responsible for their lunch accounts, and they should not be penalized for their parents’ mistakes. The school should have been more lenient and given parents more time to respond and contribute to their children’s lunch funds, as this incident was only two days after a phone message was sent out to parents.

It should be a school’s responsibility to make sure children are fed, whether or not their parents are contributing. Nourishment is very important to a child’s ability to learn, and there is no excuse to take lunch from a child, especially at an elementary school level. Any officials involved in taking lunches from these children should be fired from their positions, and the school should create a new lunch policy to accommodate the children whose parents may not be up to date on payments.

Please sign the petition below to ensure that all involved in this cruel incident are properly punished.

Dear Salt Lake City school district officials,

The recent actions of a Salt Lake City elementary school taking away the lunches of elementary children with zero or negative account balances was cruel and uncalled for. Children at that age are too young to understand how their lunch account works, which was made clear by the confused reactions of crying and embarrassed children. The school acted very immaturely by throwing away and wasting their lunches, only to give them milk and a piece of fruit instead.  This was a cruel punishment on innocent children, as it should not be the children’s responsibility to monitor their parents and make sure they are providing them with enough money.

Schools should be lenient regarding lunch account balances, and ensure that children are fed regardless of their parents’ actions or any other circumstances. Any school officials involved in this incident should not be allowed to work with children. We ask that you replace them with more mature and logical figures. We also ask that you require this school to make a new protocol for handling students’ account balances in the future. This act cannot go condoned or unjustified. Thank you for your anticipated assistance.
