Target: Mr. Oleg Deripaska
Goal: Thank Russian billionaire for rescuing dozens of stray animals from cull
Recently, some of Sochi’s stray animals were saved from death by Oleg Deripaska, a Russian aluminum tycoon. The stray dogs and cats were being executed en masse before the Olympics due to fear that the dog packs would be a nuisance to guests. Thank Deripaska for his commitment to the protection of these innocent animals.
Deripaska, who invested over a billion dollars on the Sochi games and the Olympic village, befriended a homeless street dog when he was young. He has now found time to help some of the stray pets that roam the Olympic grounds, lured by the possibility of being fed by construction workers or tourists.
Deripaska has paid to have some of Sochi’s stray dogs transported to a makeshift shelter. So far, over 150 animals have been saved, some of which have already been adopted into new homes. Under his direction, a wildlife shelter run by Olga Melnikova has deployed a dog rescue golf cart, which rounds up the dogs for transportation.
Without help, any of the dogs and cats that have been displaced due to construction of the Olympic games would have been shot by pest control companies hired by Sochi city hall. The contract with the company required 2000 animals to be removed and disposed of within about a week, an increase of over five times the regular monthly removal quota.
Without the help of caring citizens, the dozens of animals saved would have faced similarly unnecessary deaths. Thank Mr. Deripaska for his compassionate efforts to rescue stray dogs from death and re-home them to improve their quality of life.
Dear Mr. Oleg Deripaska
You recently teamed up with an animal rescue shelter run by Olga Melnikova to save stray dogs from being killed before the Sochi Olympic Games. The stray dogs, to be executed by the thousands, would be shot and disposed of as they were considered a potential nuisance to Olympic guests and athletes.
Without your help, the 150 dogs that have already been rescued would have been executed in order to keep them off of Sochi streets during the games. Thank you for your efforts, which have surely improved the quality of life of some of the many strays displaced by the development of the Olympic village.
