Applaud São Paulo for Banning Animal Testing

animal testing 3

Target: São Paulo Governor Geraldo Alckmin

Goal: Commend São Paulo for adopting legislation that prohibits cosmetic testing on animals and establishing hefty fines to help deter any future testing

The state of São Paulo in Brazil has taken a strong stance against animal cruelty by officially adopting a ban on animal testing for cosmetics, perfumes and personal care items. Companies that are found guilty of violating this ban will face hefty penalties as well. First-time offenders will be fined $435,000 for each animal that has been used for testing purposes. Repeat offenders could be faced with doubled fines and the permanent closure of their business.

More than 700 of the 2,300 cosmetic companies in Brazil operate in São Paulo, making it home to the large majority of Brazilian cosmetic companies. São Paulo is the first state to issue a ban on cosmetics animal testing, so hopefully this new legislation will encourage similar action in Brazil’s remaining states.

The actions of the São Paulo government sends a strong message to the federal government, as well as other countries worldwide, that causing animals pain and suffering to test cosmetics is unethical and must stop. This is a huge step forward in the fight for animal rights, and hopefully other governments will take the appropriate actions to enforce cruelty-free production and save innocent animals from unnecessary pain and suffering.

Dear Governor Alckmin,

I would like to sincerely thank you for supporting legislation that prohibits animal testing for cosmetics, perfumes and personal care items in the state of São Paulo.

I appreciate the time that you spent speaking with animal rights activists, scientists, veterinarians and members of the cosmetics industries. Your thoroughness in investigating this issue shows that animal rights is something that the São Paulo government takes very seriously, and I commend you for taking a strong stance against animal cruelty with the implementation of this new legislation.

The heavy fines placed on first-time offenders will also be an excellent deterrent against animal testing. These new laws will no doubt save thousands of gentle creatures from inhumane treatment.

Thank you again for taking such a strong stance against animal abuse by banning animal cosmetics testing in São Paulo. Hopefully your actions will inspire other governments to employ similar legislation.
