Target: David Miscavige, head of the Church of Scientology
Goal: End the use of child labor in Scientology camps
Scientologists in Australia are forcing children into labor, keeping them away from outside media, and making them perform menial labor for virtually no pay. Forced to provide other members of the church with daily necessities, children in these camps are given virtually no free time, often working as much as 35 hours in a week while living in conditions described as being similar to a gulag by escapees. After being forced to do military-style exercises as a force of discipline, one young man who escaped told the news program “Today Tonight” about his experiences.
Shane Kelly, the escapee, was sent to the Rehabilitation Project Force, a Scientology “rehabilitation” camp, by his fanatical parents at the age of six. He claims to have been quartered in a room with eleven other children and made to sign a contract pledging the next billion years to service of the organization, at the age of eight. Able to see his parents only once a week and deprived of any outside influence, Kelly and the other children at the camp were told that everyone outside Scientology was foolishly ignorant of the saving graces of the religion.
The children at the camp were forced to spend what little money they had on food at the community mess hall, where they were allowed to eat only after the adults were finished. Each meal cost about 30 cents, yet when each child made as little as $4 a week, there wasn’t much to go around.
All reports indicate that these atrocities toward children are still happening at this camp and others like it. Pledge to bring awareness to their plight and to stop this organization from robbing children of their youth.
Dear David Miscavige,
Immediately cease using child labor in Scientology camps. Child labor not only robs children of their childhoods, but also subjects them to treatment that no human should face. The fact that these children have no say in their decisions or treatment proves that they are being treated in ways that are beyond inhumane. Making children work for pennies a day under such circumstances is punishable by law, regardless of any religious reasoning.
It is only fair to compare the grueling punishments and slave-like treatments of these children to the worst of history’s offenders, and we cannot allow this to continue. You must immediately release these children to their parents or, perhaps better yet, into the care of the Australian government so that they may be exposed to the real world and given a chance at having a childhood.
