Target: Representative Michael Grimm of New York
Goal: Demand Congressman Grimm resign for threatening to throw a reporter off a balcony
Representative Michael Grimm has apologized to a NY1 reporter after threatening to throw the reporter off of the balcony on Capitol Hill. His threats came during an on camera interview where the reporter asked the representative about an ongoing investigation concerning Congressmen’s Grimm allegedly taking donations from his campaign.
It started when reporter Michael Sotto asked Congressmen Grimm about the ongoing investigation, which is being conducted by the U.S. Justice Department. Congressmen Grimm refused to answer any questions regarding this case and surged off camera. The reporter then stepped into the camera saying, “Alright, so Congressman Michael Grimm does not want to talk about the allegations concerning his campaign finances,” Scotto said. “We wanted to get him on camera on that, but he, as you saw, refused to talk about that. Back to you.”
Shortly after, Congressmen Grimm stormed back into the camera and got into the reporter’s face saying, “Let me be clear to you: If you ever do that to me again, I’ll throw you off this f***ing balcony,” Grimm said.
Sotto replied that he was asking a “valid question.”
The congressmen quickly retaliated, “No, no. You’re not man enough, you’re not man enough. I’ll break you in half, like a boy,” Grimm replied.
Congressman Grimm extended apologies to the reporter, who accepted and the both of them are going to have lunch together. He said he would ensure this whole incident would be behind them. Congressman Grimm stated that he was already very annoyed before he gave the interview because he was doing NY1 a favor by allowing them to interview him before other pressing matters.
“The reporter knew that I was in a hurry and was only there to comment on the State of the Union, but insisted on taking a disrespectful and cheap shot at the end of the interview, because I did not have time to speak off-topic,” he added.
Congressman Grimm is under investigation by the Justice Department after being accused of taking donations from overseas and encouraging donors to exceed contribution limits. While two people who are close to the Congressman have been charged in the case, Grimm hasn’t and denies any involvement with the case.
While reporters are known to be aggressive and persistent in getting a story, it is worth noting that their work is how Americans receive news about our country. Despite how Congressman Grimm feels about the reporter’s conduct, Sotto had every right to ask a question about the ongoing investigation, for the public’s sake. Such threatening and disturbing behavior should not be seen in a Congressman. You can demand his resignation by signing this petition.
Dear Representative Michael Grimm,
I am quite appalled with the way you dealt with NY1 reporter Michael Sotto. Threatening to throw the man off of the balcony for asking a valid question should not be the way a Congressman conducts himself. While you may have felt that you were doing the reporter a favor by conducting an interview, Sotto had every right to ask a question regarding your case and ongoing investigation. The American public has every right to know what is going on with the representatives in charge of running their nation.
I am quite disturbed at the way you treated Sotto, and I realize you have a history of being testy with reporters, not just Sotto. As a politician, you should know how to keep your cool when under pressure. Reporters are a part of the career, and they are responsible for getting news out to the public. I demand your immediate resignation as I find your conduct to be appalling and deeply disturbing.
