Target: House Representative Paul Broun
Goal: Persuade Congressman Broun to end his contest to give away an AR-15 assault rifle
Georgia Congressman Paul Broun recently emailed supporters to inform them of a new contest sponsored by his campaign for Senate. The prize: a brand new, semi-automatic AR-15 assault rifle.
Broun is currently competing in the Republican nomination for one of Georgia’s U.S. Senate seats. He stated in his email: “As one of the most conservative members of Congress, and a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment, I am constantly under attack for my values and beliefs.” He is offering the rifle as a way to push back against those who wish to limit sales of certain weapons.
The AR-15 was the weapon used in the Sandy Hook school shooting, and has been suggested as a gun that should be removed from public sale. Broun’s move follows a similar contest sponsored by South Carolina state Senator Lee Bright’s campaign for the U.S. Senate, and is an obvious attempt to distinguish himself as the most conservative candidate among the eight people running for the GOP nomination.
Although this contest could be easily overlooked as a pathetic campaign gimmick and an effort to garner some media attention, it should more properly be seen as a slap in the face to all those who have lost loved ones to senseless violence and as another symbol of the gun lobby’s willingness to stoop to new lows to push its agenda.
The Second Amendment is a point of contention between the two parties, and a callous and provocative giveaway of this sort does nothing but serve to increase divisions in this country. Support for gun rights is one thing, but sponsoring a contest to give out a free assault rifle is both unnecessary and irresponsible.
Sign this petition to call on Rep. Broun to end this senseless contest and find a better way to distinguish himself in his Senate campaign.
Dear House Representative Paul Broun,
Your campaign’s contest to give away a free AR-15 assault rifle is reckless and is a slap in the face to those who have lost loved ones at the hands of this and similar weapons, including the victims of the Sandy Hook school shooting. Support for gun rights is one thing, but giving away an assault rifle is a highly irresponsible way to attempt to distinguish yourself from your opponents.
I am writing to urge you to end this contest and find a better way to prove your support of the Second Amendment to your potential voters.
