Target: Governor Andrew Cuomo
Goal: Thank Governor Cuomo for funding universal state-wide pre-k education and encourage him to remain open to other funding proposals
The Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, has agreed to fund public statewide preschool education. This is a huge victory for education advocates who have been pushing for universal pre-k education for the past several years.
Research on pre-kindergarten education has shown a direct correlation between preschool attendance and lower high school dropout rates. A solid foundation in education brings greater success for these students. In addition, many parents need to have public pre-k so that they can work without paying a nanny or babysitter.
Hopefully other states will follow New York’s example, as many have placed a focus on education in their budgets this year. Regardless, creating this program will be good for the people and the economy of New York.
However, the benefits of the program are not secured yet. Before the program is initialized, a budget deal must be finalized. Some education advocates have claimed that there is not a large enough allocation to cover all education costs. In addition, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was elected on the promise that universal pre-k education would be created, is pushing to fund the program by taxing the rich.
It would be terrible for this victory to be lost due to political squabbling. Governor Cuomo should be commended for supporting the program, but he should be open to other options so that the program can actually be implemented. Sign this petition to encourage Governor Cuomo to support the program and keep an open mind towards the funding source.
Dear Governor Andrew Cuomo,
Your support of universal pre-kindergarten education is great news for the people of New York. This measure will boost New York’s economy, decrease the high school dropout rate, and improve the lives of many. I commend you for agreeing to fund the program.
As the budget negotiations proceed, please be pragmatic. The program will improve the lives of so many that it should not matter from where the funding comes. I encourage you to honor your commitment and remain open to other funding options. Universal pre-k education is what the people of New York will thank you for, so please ensure that the program succeeds.
