Target: Fox News host Bill O’Reilly
Goal: Encourage O’Reilly to stop inviting radical guests on the news and return to responsible journalism
Texas megachurch pastor Robert Jeffress recently appeared on The O’Reilly Factor to discuss his newest book, Perfect Ending, in which he claims that President Obama and the Affordable Care Act are preludes to the anti-Christ. Providing a platform to guests with these fringe beliefs does nothing to encourage an actual discussion of the issues at hand and does not represent responsible journalism.
Jeffress, senior pastor at First Dallas Baptist, said that the implementation and acceptance of a national healthcare system is mentally preparing the country to consent to a future world dictator who will be the anti-Christ. Although Jeffress stopped short of proclaiming Obama himself the anti-Christ – saying “the anti-Christ is going to have higher poll numbers, according to the Bible” – such radical and sensationalist rhetoric should not have a place on any legitimate news source. Despite Fox’s well-known bend towards the right and the collective distaste its hosts and correspondents have for Obamacare, efforts should still be made to provide rational and enlightening content rather than continually covering those who make absurdist claims.
Besides the Affordable Care Act, Jeffress claims that the President’s support for marriage equality lays the ground work for the future anti-Christ by showing that a leader can flout God’s law without facing any repercussions.
Responsible journalism calls for a rational discussion of issues pertinent to the outlet’s audience, not providing a platform for those with radical, fringe beliefs. Many, many people are against the Affordable Care Act and marriage equality, but there are plenty of people who can articulate logical reasoning for these beliefs without referencing Satan and the apocalypse.
Sign this petition to encourage O’Reilly and his Fox News counterparts to stop inviting guests with extreme beliefs onto their shows and to return to a more lucid discussion of actual issues.
Dear Bill O’Reilly,
Your recent guest Robert Jeffress claimed on your show that President Obama and the Affordable Care Act are paving the way for future acceptance of the anti-Christ by preparing the population to accept governmental overreach. While this man is certainly entitled to his own opinions, standards of responsible journalism call for a rational discussion of important issues, not searching out guests with fringe views in order to perpetuate opposition to Obamacare.
I am asking you to stop inviting radical guests onto the news to discuss fringe views that do nothing to further a sensible discussion of the issues that matter to your viewers.
