Commend Creation of Task Force to Combat Sexual Assault

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Commend President Obama’s plan to create a task force on campus sexual assault

Just one month after he gave the Pentagon one year to curb the number of sexual assaults in the military, President Barack Obama signed a memorandum to create a task force to combat sexual assault with a particular focus on college campuses in the United States. The task force will renew pressure on universities and colleges to prevent sexual assault and pursue charges against perpetrators.

As part of the proceedings, The White House Council on Women and Girls released a report on the statistics of rape and assault and the Obama Administration’s previous and future actions to combat this type of violence called “Rape and Sexual Assault: A Renewed Call to Action.” The report says that rape is most common on college campuses, where one in five students is assaulted but only just above ten percent of them actually report the abuse. Additionally, most perpetrators are serial offenders, often victimizing young women while they are inebriated or unconscious.

Sexual violence on school campuses has been getting a lot of attention this past year, with high-profile court cases with obscenely ill-informed, insensitive, and unprofessional college medical staff and police officials embarrassing colleges across the nation, including incidents at Swarthmore College, Occidental College, and Northwestern University, among many others.

Vice President Joe Biden, who was the main legislator pushing for the passage of the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 said that, “our daughters, our sisters, our wives, our mothers, our grandmothers have every single right to expect to be free from violence and sexual abuse,” Mr. Biden said. “No matter what she’s wearing, no matter whether she’s in a bar, in a dormitory, in the back seat of a car, on a street, drunk or sober — no man has a right to go beyond the word ‘no.’ And if she can’t consent, it also means no.”

Please sign this petition to commend President Obama for recognizing the issue of sexual assault on college campuses in the United States and for taking action to prevent this kind of traumatic violence.

Dear President Obama,

I would like to sincerely thank you for your efforts to curb sexual assault not only in the ranks of the military, but now across college campuses in the United States. Rape and sexual assault is an enormous problem for many students. If gone unchecked, this kind of violence could have a huge impact on the education and health of an entire portion of the population that has been victimized by rape culture. Our higher institutions of learning should not be a breeding ground for this kind of brutal ignorance.

Thank you for your creation of a task force to target this issue specifically and help curb this violence. Please continue in your efforts to prevent sexual assault in our nation.

  1. This issue needs to be addressed while the kids are in high school before they go to college or join the military.
