Target: Juan Pablo, star of “The Bachelor”
Goal: Convince TV show star Juan Pablo to rectify his offensive comments about the possibility of a gay Bachelor or Bachelorette
The star of this season’s “The Bachelor”, Juan Pablo recently made demeaning comments about the gay community when asked what he would think if they created a gay edition of the Bachelor or the Bachelorette. These comments should be immediately rectified on behalf of all those offended.
When asked recently if he thought a gay Bachelor/Bachelorette would be a good idea, Juan Pablo said “I respect them, but I don’t think it is a good example for kids to watch that on TV” Everyone is entitled to their own religious views on homosexuality but Juan Pablo’s insensitive comments extend further than religion. He went on to say “There’s this thing about gay people — it seems to be, I don’t know if I’m mistaken or not — I have a lot of friends like that, but they’re more pervert in a sense.” Juan Pablo’s comments not only suggest that it is wrong to be gay, but also that gays are more perverted than straight people.
These comments are rude and make false assumptions about homosexuals. Juan Pablo thinks that seeing gay people on television would be a bad example for a child, ignorantly suggesting that people choose to be gay. This is a common misconception that is both offensive and ignorant. Many people are arguing that Juan Pablo’s statements are unjustified because he is dating 27 women at the same time, something that would in most cases be considered a poor example for children. Finally, just because Juan Pablo happens to be friends with a few gay people that he considers perverted, does not mean that this is how the gay community is as a whole.
Juan Pablo’s comments seem overall very unjustified and he should apologize for blindly judging. He offended many people, both gay and straight with his controversial comments.
Please sign the petition below to insist that Juan Pablo apologize for his comments and take any actions necessary to rectify his mistakes.
Dear Juan Pablo,
Your recent comments about gay people were highly offensive to both gay and straight individuals. You made several ignorant comments which made multiple false assumptions about gay people.
By saying it is a bad example for children to see gay people on television, you are suggesting that children will see these people and decide they want to be gay like them. Gay people do not choose to be gay and that misconception is very hurtful. Not to mention the fact that you are dating 27 women at the same time, which can most definitely be considered a poor example for children, especially as a father of a young child who looks up to you. You also stated that gay people are “more pervert,” based on a few gay friends that you have. Just because you happen to be friends with a few gay people who you see to be perverts, does not mean that the whole gay population should be generalized this way.
The homosexual community has the constant burden of dealing with critical and offensive comments, but your recent words were particularly hurtful. We ask that you apologize for these comments as well as taking any actions necessary to rectify your mistakes.
