Remove Global Warming Skeptic from Environmental Leadership Role

Target:  Congressman David Schweikert

Goal: Tell Congressman David Schweikert to step down from his position as leader of the Science Committee’s environment subcommittee

Representative David Schweikert of Arizona, who questions whether global warming is caused by human activity, was recently chosen by house Republicans as head of the Science Committee’s environment subcommittee. Given that climate change is an issue of such enormous magnitude, it is highly inappropriate for someone who is skeptical about the theory of global warming to hold a position as head of a congressional subcommittee that oversees environmental legislation. Representative Shchweiker should resign his position as head of the Science Committee’s environment subcommittee so that someone more appropriate for the role can be selected.

It is widely accepted that increased levels of greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide attributed to human activity are causing global temperature increases. If the disastrous consequences of climate change are to be avoided, it is essential that our leaders understand the science behind global warming.

Representative Shchweikert has referred to global warming as “folklore”.  His previous comments make it clear that he does not take the issue of global warming seriously. By selecting a global warming denier for such a critical role pertaining to environmental legislation the house Republicans are doing a disservice to the people they represent.

Polls indicate that most Americans believe that human-caused climate change is real. They deserve to have leaders that respect the science behind global warming, not a person such as Representative Shweickert who holds science in disdain and makes jokes about global warming. We should demand that Representative Shchweikert resign his position as head of the Science Committee’s environment subcommittee so that someone better suited for this role can be chosen.

Dear Congressman David Schweikert:

Most Americans take the threat of global warming very seriously. We deserve to have leaders that understand the science behind global warming serving in important leadership roles such as the head of the Science Committee’s environment subcommittee.

The viewpoints you have expressed in the past demonstrate your lack of knowledge regarding the issue of global warming. Given the potentially disastrous consequences that may result from unchecked global warming, it is inappropriate for someone like yourself, who has demonstrated ignorance regarding this issue, to fill a role so critical to addressing climate change.

Since you have referred to global warming as “folklore,” you cannot be taking your role as leader of this subcommittee seriously. I recommend that you resign your position as leader of this subcommittee so that a more appropriate person can be selected.

  1. Has the person who instigated this petition never heard of that wonderful thing called FREE SPEECH.
Granted, global warming / climate change MAY be happening, but then again it MAY not be happening, but whether some undemocratic people like it or not, EVERYONE has the right to disagree.

    • Robert Ortiz says:

First of all global warming is happening and there is scientific data to back it up. It is science doubters and climate change deniers that refuse to acknowledge its existence.

Secondly, everyone has the right to disagree but in this particular instance he should not be in an environmental leadership role since that disagreement could very well impede his ability to do the job properly.
