Target: My Little Waiting Room Founders Amy Paterson, Melissa Moore, Stephanie Smith
Goal: Commend organization for creating child care services for the families of patients at hospitals
Beating a life-threatening illness takes an exhaustive amount of time and energy. Yet, many patients have to rely solely on the generosity of friends and family for support. As the illness and treatment progresses, patients must make trips to the hospital, often with little notice. For patients with children, this means coordinating child care quickly or, since parents often cannot find care quickly, taking their children with them to the hospital. This puts undue stress on parents already dealing with a serious illness, nurses who are called upon to take care of the children, and the children themselves.
Amy Paterson experienced this frequent lack of access to child care and its consequences when she fought her own battle with cancer. Even with support from her husband, friends and family, it was a struggle to find child care for 144 appointments in one year. Through conversations with her friend Melissa Moore, the two realized there was a serious need for drop-in child care services at hospitals. Together with their friend, Stephanie Smith, they founded My Little Waiting Room to provide that service to hospitals in Portland, Oregon.
My Little Waiting Room, operating in two hospitals in Portland, relieves some of the stress that comes with being a parent with a life-threatening disease. But it also gives parents the peace of mind that encourages them to seek help when they need it. Being a parent is a full-time job and often parents forget to take care of themselves. Indeed, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services, female caregivers in the US are twice as likely to not seek medical aid when necessary. My Little Waiting Room lets these patients focus on their own healthcare.

Dear Amy Paterson, Melissa Moore, and Stephanie Smith,
Thank you for creating My Little Waiting Room and providing much-needed support for families dealing with life-threatening illnesses. By providing drop-in child care service in hospitals in Portland, Oregon, parents are more likely to seek healthcare when they need it, and they have more energy to focus on getting better when they need to do that.
This is not a service that many people would think of, but it is clearly a necessary one for parents to recover from serious conditions. Again, thank you for supporting parents who already have so much to handle and for allowing them to feel able to seek help.
