Target: Neil Young
Goal: Thank rock musician Neil Young for raising money and awareness to protect Canada’s environment
Veteran performer and rock legend Neil Young has been performing a series of benefit concerts which will raise funds to help fight the expansion of the destructive Alberta oil sands project in his native country, Canada. The development of oil sands has been linked to water pollution, carbon emissions, land destruction, and even elevated cancer rates.
According to Young’s website, proceeds from the “Honor the Treaties” tour will go to “the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) Legal Defense Fund,” which “was set up to support the ACFN’s legal challenges against oil companies and governments that are obstructing their traditional lands and rights.” At a recent news conference Young called out Prime Minister Stephen Harper, saying, “I see a government just completely out of control. Money is number one. Integrity isn’t even on the map.”
The “Old Man” singer even offered suggestions for alternative energy sources in a statement to CBC News. “I drove my electric car from California to the tar sands and on to Washington DC without using any oil at all,” Young said. “My car’s generator runs on biomass, one of several future fuels Canada should be developing.”
The “Honor the Treaties” tour is only a fraction of the great work that Neil Young has done to better the world. He holds a yearly concert to benefit his organization the Bridge School which works “to ensure that individuals with severe speech and physical impairments achieve full participation in their communities through the use of augmentative & alternative means of communication.” Young is also one of the founders of Farm Aid, the non-profit organization that supports family farms and works to help independent farmers keep their land. He has also performed at the Live 8 Concert in Ontario and the America: A Tribute To Heroes 9/11 telethon.
Please take a moment to thank Neil Young for fighting the expansion of the Alberta oil sands as well as all of the great non-profit work that he does every year.
Dear Neil Young,
I was pleased to learn about your benefit concert series “Honor the Treaties,” which will raise funds to help fight the expansion of the Alberta oil sands in Canada. As you know, the development of oil sands has been linked to water pollution, greenhouse gases, land destruction and even elevated cancer rates.
You are consistently using your talent and fame to raise awareness for important causes. As a co-founder of both Farm Aid and the Bridge School you have raised millions of dollars that directly benefit these worthy causes.
Thank you for fighting the expansion of the oil sands and for all the great non-profit work that you do every year.
