Save Rare Dolphins from Extinction

Target: The Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key

Goal: Save rare dolphin subspecies by prohibiting the use of sea level seismic testing

Marine mammal scientists are urgently asking the New Zealand government to prohibit seismic testing which is affecting the only home of the world’s most rare subspecies of dolphin, called the Maui’s dolphin. Scientists believe that the noises from the tests are damaging their hearing, which causes them to swim into fishing grounds that are deemed unsafe. The dolphins are already threatened by fishing, which is their primary cause of death. Without their hearing, they fall right into the hands of fishing nets.

The critically endangered breed is under threat because there are only fifty-five adult Maui’s dolphin left living off of the coast of North Island in New Zealand. There would be no chance for the Maui’s dolphin to recover if the last fifty-five of them die after the testing.

Seismic tests find potential oil and gas deposits at the sea floor level by blasting compressed air for weeks at a time. There have been reports of bleeding mammals that were blasted by the compressed air during the routine tests. Although it doesn’t kill the animals, it leaves a lasting damage that cannot be fixed.

The impact of the seismic testing can leave drastic damage to this species. The tests are disturbing the marine mammals’ habitat and leaving them with hearing loss and injuries. Please sign this petition opposing seismic testing at the sea level.

Dear John Key, The Prime Minister of New Zealand,

The critically endangered Maui’s dolphin is threatened by seismic testing. They are the rarest subspecies of dolphins, with only 55 left off the coast of New Zealand. The tests leave considerable damage to the dolphins as well as the other hundreds of marine mammals who live on the ocean floor. If their habitat continues to be subjected to seismic testing, there won’t be thriving marine life in New Zealand anymore.

As the Prime Minister of New Zealand, put an end to this madness by prohibiting the use of seismic tests. This marine noise pollution is affecting a number of marine animals and contributing substantial harm to their health and well-being. Please ban seismic testings entirely and support alternative renewable energy. Please do all that needs to be done to protect the last fifty-five of the Maui’s dolphin.
