Commend Efforts to Improve Child Protective Services

Target: Arizona Governor Jan Brewer

Goal: Applaud courageous efforts to redesign Child Protective Services so that it has more transparency and accountability

The Arizona Child Protective Services, like other government agencies responsible for advocating for children, is poorly funded and irresponsibly run. For an example of how poorly run the Arizona branch of  Child Protective Services is, consider this: more than 6,500 cases of suspected abuse and neglect were never investigated. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer could work to fix the broken system. Instead, she has chosen to make a bold statement for advocates of children everywhere. She is dismantling the system and starting from scratch.

While there is still a lot to figure out about the exact scope and size of the new system, it will be a much-needed improvement over the old system, which left 6,500 children in potentially abusive situations. Governor Jan Brewer is very committed to changing the broken system. She has already appointed a new leader for the new organization and changed the branch of the state government that will oversee it. Previously, Brewer added 200 new workers to the old organization in an attempt to help problems with being backlogged and understaffed.

In addition to creating a new agency with more transparency, Governor Jan Brewer has also made sure that all of the cases that were overlooked are being assigned to investigators. No more children will slip through the cracks on her watch. Leaving a single child in an abusive situation is unacceptable. Thank Governor Jan Brewer sincerely for her commitment to the safety of the children of Arizona.

Dear Arizona Governor Jan Brewer,

You tried to fix the old Child Protective Services by adding 200 new workers to offset the problem of the organization being understaffed, which had resulted in backlogs and neglected cases. When that did not work, you realized that more drastic measures needed to be undertaken. You made the decision to dismantle the existing Child Protective Services and start from scratch by designing a new program. For your willingness to recognize when something is irreparable, I want to sincerely thank you.

It can be tough to initiate big change like this out of fear that something will go wrong. But since the current system is failing so miserably and resulting in up to 6,500 cases of potential abuse being overlooked, it is clear that any system will be better than the one that is currently in place to advocate for the children of Arizona.

With you behind the change, the children of Arizona will be able to sleep better at night. After all, you have their best interests at heart. That is why you have designed a new agency and appointed someone experienced to direct it.

For your hard efforts in making sure that the children of Arizona are fully protected, I want to thank you. You are a brave role model, and the children of Arizona are lucky to have you looking out for them.

  1. Its good to hear some one out there in tbis world wants to fix children social services. I dont live in aironza.I live in california and CPS here is about money and not protecting tbe children. My children were tooken from me and tbey are all false children are my world and CPS here in california is corrupted. CPS does any means to get your chikdren tooken from you even if not neglected or abused. So many false statements they put on paper tbey dont even have proof and parents arent eve. allowed to speak to defend themselfs.CPS needs to get reformed here in california.CPS is gladly to your kids, but when its time for them to do “reasonable efforts” they arent there .
I know im just one voice but I as a parent needs to be heard. Many parents in California lose there kids because of the social workers. wish we had a good govener that would want to reform CPS s in california. it really needs it .
