Goal: Support program to install water decontamination systems in Bangladesh
The availability of clean water is a relevant concern to much of the developing world. According to the Center for Disease Control, over 2,000 children under the age of 5 die every day as a result of diarrheal diseases. These illnesses are caused by unsafe drinking water and inadequate availability of water for hygiene. This global epidemic of clean water scarcity hits Bangladesh with an added hardship – chronic arsenic poisoning. In addition to the threat of E. coli and cholera contamination, Bangladeshi wells are laced with naturally occurring arsenic from local soil. These wells are the main source of water for 90% of Bangladesh’s population and are in desperate need of an efficient and durable water treatment solution.
PurifAid aims to provide immediate access to clean water by outfitting wells with a purification system, called a DRAM unit, capable of removing 95% of arsenic and other contaminants. Low-maintenance well filters serve the community and assure that individual families will not carry the burden of high-maintenance in-home filtration systems. The DRAM filters are made of locally available waste materials, such as rice husks and coconut shells. Each filter cartridge lasts for months and the system requires no electricity. This inexpensive, sustainable, and eco-friendly solution is capable of saving millions from what the World Health Organization calls “the largest mass poisoning of a population in history.” PurifAid’s ultimate goal is to expand their project to other areas suffering from the global catastrophe of arsenic poisoning, including China, Vietnam, and parts of Africa. The eventual installation of PurifAid’s filters worldwide would benefit millions.
