Commend County for Standing up for Animal Rights

Target: Dallas district attorney Craig Watkins

Goal: Thank Dallas district attorney Craig Watkins for developing a new animal cruelty unit

Dallas County, Texas has created a special unit dedicated to prosecuting animal cruelty cases. This will help Dallas officials protect animals from neglect and mistreatment, while ensuring that animal abusers are held accountable for their actions. This is a huge victory for animals and animal lovers in Dallas.

According to Culture Map Dallas, “Safer Dallas Better Dallas, a nonprofit law enforcement support organization, has committed to fund the first year” at an estimated cost of $200,000. Dallas Animal Services division manager Jody Jones contributed a great deal to the creation of the unit. Jones has previously been a champion for animals as a faculty member of the Animal Cruelty Advisory Council of the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys and she has helped develop animal cruelty units all over the United States.

Dallas County explains the reasoning for developing the unit on its website. It states, “With over 2,500 cases of animal cruelty reported in 2012, animal cruelty continues to be a serious problem throughout Dallas County. Recognizing the need for effective prosecution of offenders that neglect, torture and kill animals, the DA’s office sends a strong message to their perpetrators: Dallas County will not tolerate animal abuse.” The website also provides information about animal cruelty charges, sentencing guidelines and who to contact if you suspect someone of animal cruelty. Dallas County smartly references the correlation between violence against animals and violence towards humans. This new unit will make Dallas safer for all living beings.

Dallas is sending a clear message that animal abuse will not be tolerated in the county. Please take a moment to thank them for being champions for animals by creating the new animal cruelty unit.
